Experiences in physical activity help regulate a person's self-concept with regard to physical ability. When sporting experiences are successful and enjoyable for the individual, positive sporting self-concept develops. This positive self-concept grows confidence in physical abilities and the individual is more motivated to be engaged in physical activity (Kiss et al, 2010). People with a positive body image tend to have a positive self-image and greater self-esteem, compared to those who have a poor body image. The development of a good body image is therefore essential in developing self-confidence and a positive outlook on life. This positive body image is also a significant factor in an individual's participation in physical activity.
My personal experiences in dance have helped regulate my positive self-concept concerning physical ability. I have developed a positive sporting self-concept from successful and enjoyable experiences in physical activity. This self-concept positively influences my access to dance as i am motivated to be engaged in a new physical challenge, and would therefore enter dance with an expectation of success.
Poor experiences in dance may lead to a lower self-esteem and therefore the opportunity to take up dance in the future would not be taken. A person with high self-esteem may also have poor experiences in dance, the difference being that because of their positive self-concept and therefore high-self-esteem, they are able to bounce back and still have the same positive outlook on life. This poor experience has not lowered their self-concept and may not have pushed the person away from dance. By having a positive self-concept, I will be able to give dance another try if I were to have a poor experience with it in the future, as I enter the sport with an expectation of success. As my self-esteem and self-concept will not become lower as a result of a poor experience in dance, I will be motivated to continue to reach a level in dance of success and self-actualisation.
